Weather is the other reason. A WR-coated shell will not replace a rain jacket, but it keeps a light and phone usable on a wet commute. Pair the bag with EDC for rainy cities. A tiny keychain flashlight stays on the keys; the sling holds the rest.

Tradeoff: one strap, uneven load, no laptop-class commute. Daily 14-inch machine? Keep the backpack. Tools and tech that change by job? Interior layout matters more than extra liters.

VAULT Sling: Swap Boards, Not Bags

VAULT Sling is PD EDC's answer to "I own three pouches because Tuesday is tools and Thursday is cables." The brand's press copy (EIN Presswire, Feb 17, 2026) puts swappable Flex Boards in a front docking zone: elastic and pocket layouts you swap instead of fighting sewn-in slots. That is internal reconfig, not a MOLLE wall. Campaign copy also says the sling takes previous-generation VAULT boards, so existing VAULT-M2 / organizer owners are the obvious Core Pack buyer - nod only; those are separate products, not this review.

Expansion is magnetic, not a zipper gusset you forget to close. Maker claim: 7L compact to 9L expanded via a dual-magnet structure. We have not independently measured those liters. Treat 7-9L as the marketing envelope: daily slim profile, two extra liters when a bottle, layer, or tablet actually shows up.

Kickstarter's own late_pledge_enabled flag is false. PD EDC's product page still says "Live on KICKSTARTER." The Wix /shop catalog is placeholder "I'm a product" SKUs, not a VAULT Sling checkout. Do not treat this as in-stock retail. If you want one, you are waiting on fulfillment, a future store drop, or a secondary listing - confirm before you pay.

Organization is fold-and-hook dividers, not a dock of EDC boards.

Materials (maker / retailer spec sheets): weather-resistant 100% recycled 400D nylon canvas, double poly-coated and DWR-impregnated, plus a 900D waterproof bottom. Weight is the spec that web roundups smear: Pixel Connection / B&H-style sheets list 0.58 kg (580 g) empty and 0.78 kg (780 g) with dividers. LOCHBY Field Sling is the anti-system pick. Brand specs: 3L, 10 × 6.7 × 1.6 in, 7.94 oz (225 g), water-resistant waxed canvas, high-vis honeycomb lining, one-hand clasp, rotating strap (29.5-55 in). Brand price $59, ships in 1 business day. Fits an iPad Mini; it will not eat a 7-9L tool dump.

Grab it when boards are overkill and you want a quiet canvas dump for phone, wallet, Mini, and pens. Not weatherproof - brand FAQ says light rain, not a downpour.

Kargo Loculus X-Pack: Colorado X-Pac, Fixed Org

Kargo Gear's Loculus X-Pack is the made-in-Colorado, buy-now technical sling. Brand page: $145, 1.2 lb (~544 g), X-Pac® X21 shell, 1080D Cordura® ballistic bottom, high-vis orange 420D interior, YKK® AquaGuard® zips, seven interior pockets, hidden back zipper sleeve, luggage pass-through, bottom compression straps. One Shear's live listing prints 5.5L; some resellers print 6L. Use ~5.5L until Kargo's own page states a liter number.

No Flex Boards, no magnetic expand. You get sewn pockets and a waterproof laminate. Stock on the brand page was low (single-digit) at check - re-check before you plan on a colorway.

Who Should Buy Which (And Who Should Skip Crowdfunding)

Get VAULT Sling if you already own VAULT boards, your week actually changes (tools vs tech vs travel dump), and you can wait. Magnetic 7-9L is the point only if you live both sizes. Treat Kickstarter success as "funded," not "on a UPS truck tomorrow." July 2026 was the last update stamp we saw - read the live updates before you chase a leftover.

Get Peak Design 6L if you want a known quantity this week, you like FlexFold cubes, and you might still drop a small camera in. It is the wrong hero if you wanted MOLLE-free EDC boards.

Get LOCHBY if 3L and 225 g are the feature, $59 is the budget, and you open a bag one-handed more than you reconfigure it.

Get Kargo if you want X-Pac in hand, luggage-handle travel, and sewn org, and $145 for Colorado-made is acceptable.

Skip all four if a compact backpack is doing real laptop work. Skip VAULT if you need a returnable bag tonight.

VAULT Sling vs Peak Design Everyday 6L - which is the better modular EDC sling?

Different modular. VAULT swaps boards for tools and tech. Peak Design folds dividers for cameras and cubes. If "modular EDC" means loadout panels, VAULT is the idea. If it means a bag you can buy and pack this afternoon, Peak Design wins.

Will Flex Boards fit older VAULT organizers?
