The short answer: both weigh 5 oz on their makers' spec sheets and both have needle-nose and regular pliers, wire cutters, a locking blade and a carabiner-style clip. Pick the Skeletool if you want a bit driver that takes standard bits and a named blade steel (420HC). Pick the Crucial if you want to spend $5 to $10 less and fixed Phillips and flat drivers are enough.

Specs, prices and stock are from Leatherman's Skeletool page and Gerber's Crucial Blue and Crucial Black pages. Retailer prices vary.

Pliers and cutters

Both tools put needle-nose and regular pliers up front. Leatherman lists wire cutters and hard-wire cutters on the Skeletool. Gerber lists V-cut wire cutters on the Crucial. If you cut harder wire, the Skeletool is the one with dedicated hard-wire cutters on its spec list.

Drivers: bits vs fixed

This is the biggest practical difference. The Skeletool has a large bit driver, ships with Phillips #1 and #2 plus 1/4 in and 3/16 in flat bits, and stores bits in the handle, so you can swap in other Leatherman-compatible bits. The Crucial has a fixed Phillips and a large flat driver. They're always there, but you can't change sizes.

Blade and clip

Leatherman lists a 2.6 in 420HC stainless combo blade that locks. Gerber lists a 1.75 in partially serrated blade with a thumb stud and a liner lock on the Blue Crucial, and a half fine, half serrated blade plus a strap cutter on the Black version. Gerber doesn't name the blade steel beyond "stainless steel".

For carry, the Skeletool has a carabiner/bottle opener and a removable pocket clip. The Crucial has a bottle opener, a carabiner clip and a pocket clip. Both have blades, so TSA officers decide at the checkpoint, and checked luggage is the safer place for either.

Size and weight

On paper they tie on weight: 5 oz for the Skeletool and 5.0 oz for the Crucial. Leatherman lists the Skeletool at 4 in closed. Gerber's product pages list the Crucial at 2.75 in closed and 4.5 in overall, which looks short for a 5 oz plier tool, so check the size on a retailer listing if pocket length matters to you.

If you want more

Leatherman's Skeletool CX keeps the same layout with a 154CM blade for $99.95 (price at publish, Oct 2026). On the Gerber side, the Stakeout Drive adds a flip bit driver, scissors and a file at 7.4 oz for $79.99, in stock at publish. Who should buy which

Pick the Skeletool if you drive a lot of screws and want swappable bits, a named blade steel and Leatherman's 25-year warranty.

Pick the Crucial if you want the lower price, fixed drivers are enough, and you like the carabiner clip. Choose the Black version if you want the strap cutter.
