How we picked

Every knife here is a folder with a pocket clip, a blade around 3 to 3.5 inches (the Mini Praxis is smaller), and a listed price at or under $50 on a live maker or major knife retailer page at publish. We compared listed steel, lock, blade length and weight. We didn't handle or use these knives for this guide, and we haven't ranked edge retention or toughness ourselves. Where a maker gives a hardness (HRC) range, we've included it.

Which steel am I buying?

The steels on this list, in plain terms:

  • 14C28N (QSP Penguin Glyde): a Swedish stainless steel from Alleima, known for being easy to sharpen and resisting rust.
  • AR-RPM9 (Artisan REVEL, CJRB Feldspar): a proprietary powder steel used by Artisan Cutlery and its CJRB brand, which both list at HRC 59-61.
  • D2 (CIVIVI Mini Praxis, QSP Penguin V2): a tool steel that's only semi-stainless, so wipe it dry.
  • AEB-L (Kizer Pokiman): a fine-grained stainless steel, which Kizer lists at 58-60 HRC.
  • 8Cr13MoV and AUS-8 (Kershaw Maneuver and Lateral, Ontario RAT 2): budget stainless steels that are easy to sharpen.

For keeping any of these sharp, see our knife care and sharpening guide.

FAQ

What is the best EDC knife under $50?

On specs, the Artisan REVEL ($44.99) stands out for its button lock, AR-RPM9 steel and 3.54 in blade. If you want 14C28N steel and less weight, the QSP Penguin Glyde Lock ($49) is the alternative. These are spec-based picks, not results of our own use.

Which steel is best on a budget, D2, 14C28N or AR-RPM9?

It depends on what you care about. D2 is semi-stainless and needs drying. 14C28N is stainless and known for easy sharpening. AR-RPM9 is a proprietary powder steel that Artisan and CJRB list at HRC 59-61. All three appear on knives under $50 here.

Is the Kizer Pokiman under $50?

Not at publish. The Pokiman CS was $59.99 at Kizer and KnifeCenter in October 2026. Prices change, so check for sales.

It depends on where you are. Local laws vary on blade length, locking blades and assisted opening (the Kershaw Lateral is assisted). For flights, TSA officers decide, and knives generally aren't allowed in carry-on bags.
