Lamprey91 Swiss Army Knife Clip: Will It Fit?
Tortoise Gear's Lamprey91 adds a pocket clip to 91 mm Victorinox knives with no tools. Check fit, install, pricing and alternatives before you back it.

If you carry a classic 91 mm Swiss Army Knife, you know the routine: it sinks to the bottom of your pocket, rattles against your keys, or lives on a keyring because there is nowhere else to put it. Victorinox has never put a pocket clip on its standard 91 mm models, and the fixes people have tried, from drilled scales to screw-on clips, all ask you to modify a knife you probably like the way it is.
That is why the Lamprey91 from Tortoise Gear took off on Kickstarter in early October 2026. Gear Patrol reports it hit its funding goal in 36 minutes, and BackerKit's tracker showed it past $59,000 against a $5,000 goal at the time of writing. This guide answers the questions that actually decide whether you should back it: will it fit your knife, how does it go on, and what are the alternatives.
What the Lamprey91 Is
It is a stainless steel clip that wedges into the knife's existing internal geometry. Core77 describes the method: the clip slides into the thin seam between the handle scale and the inner metal liner, then seats around one of the knife's concealed rivets. No screws, no drilling, no removing the scales.
According to New Atlas and Gear Patrol:
- It attaches at the back top of the knife, so it does not block any folding tools and leaves the keyring free.
- It doubles as a 4 mm hex bit driver, sized for Victorinox bit sets.
- It has room for a lanyard (Gear Patrol says 550 paracord fits).
- Optional locking tabs can be bent before you install it to make it permanent.
- It is made in California from age-hardened, passivated stainless steel.
Tortoise Gear is also a licensed Victorinox accessory maker (it makes the FireAnt firestarter), per Gear Patrol and Core77. The clip itself, though, is not an official Victorinox product, as Men's Gear notes.
Step 1: Check Your Knife Fits
This is the part to get right before you pledge. The clip is designed only for 91 mm hidden-rivet Victorinox knives.
| Your knife | Lamprey91 fit? | How to tell |
|---|---|---|
| Current 91 mm Victorinox with smooth plastic (Cellidor) scales | Yes | No metal rivet heads visible on the scales; closed length about 91 mm or 3.6 in |
| Vintage 91 mm with exposed rivets | No | You can see round metal rivet heads on the scale surface |
| 58 mm Classic or 84 mm models | No | Clearly shorter than 91 mm |
| 111 mm locking models | No | Longer, usually with a liner lock |
| Victorinox Swiss Tool or other multitools | No | Plier-based tools, not a slip-joint SAK |
Men's Gear spells out the compatibility as all current and all hidden-rivet 91 mm models, and not vintage exposed-rivet ones. If you own an Alox (aluminum-scale) 91 mm, check the campaign page FAQ directly, since none of the coverage we found confirms Alox fit.
Step 2: Understand the Install
Based on the Core77 demonstration with Tortoise Gear founder Eric McCormick, installation takes seconds:
- Close every tool on the knife.
- Slide the clip's tab into the gap between the scale and the liner at the back end.
- Push it in until it seats around the hidden rivet.
If you want it permanent, bend the locking tabs before step 2. If you want to move it between knives, leave them flat. Either way, the knife is not altered.
Pricing and Timeline
| Item | Detail | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Kickstarter price | $25 | New Atlas, Gear Patrol |
| Expected retail | $29.99 | New Atlas |
| Estimated shipping cost | About $5 US, about $15 international | New Atlas |
| Estimated delivery | February 2027 | New Atlas, Gear Patrol, Core77 |
| Funding goal | $5,000 | BackerKit tracker |
As with any crowdfunded product, delivery dates are estimates. Kickstarter's rules make creators responsible for finishing projects and communicating if they fail, but Kickstarter says it generally cannot mediate disputes. Tortoise Gear already sells the FireAnt firestarter and the campaign funded in minutes, which helps, but backing is still a pre-order, not a purchase.

- Keyring carry with a quick release. A detachable keychain stops the knife fighting your keys. Our TiLok vs Titaner quick-release guide covers that route.
FAQ
Does the Lamprey91 work on a Victorinox Huntsman or Spartan?
Both are 91 mm models. Current versions with hidden rivets fit, according to the stated compatibility. Older exposed-rivet versions do not.
Will it scratch or damage my knife?
It is designed to install without modification. If you bend the locking tabs, treat it as a permanent fit.
Can I fly with my SAK if it has the clip?
No. The clip does not change the blade. TSA rules limit knives to checked bags.
